Tire Care in Maryland: Rotation, Balancing & Road Safety

Your tires are the only part of your vehicle that actually touch the road—which makes taking care of them essential for both safety and performance. From Severn to Glen Burnie, the roads around Anne Arundel County can be full of potholes, unpredictable weather, and construction zones. Regular tire maintenance doesn’t just help extend the life of your tires—it keeps you safer and helps your vehicle run more efficiently.

The Importance of Tire Rotation and Balancing

Tire rotation is one of the simplest, yet most effective ways to extend the lifespan of your tires. Rotating your tires (moving them from one position on the vehicle to another) helps ensure even tread wear, which improves traction and handling. Balancing your tires, on the other hand, corrects weight imbalances that can lead to uneven wear, vibrations, and even steering issues.

Here in Maryland, it’s a good idea to have your tires rotated and balanced every 6,000 to 8,000 miles—or about every other oil change. If you drive a lot in cities like Odenton or Jessup, where stop-and-go traffic and roadwork are common, you might benefit from more frequent checks.

Maryland Roads & Weather: What Your Tires Go Through

Our local roads can be tough on tires. From deep potholes in Elkridge after winter, to hot summer pavement in Crofton and heavy rain in Severna Park—your tires take a beating year-round. Pothole impacts can knock your wheels out of alignment, damage sidewalls, or cause hidden internal tire damage. Meanwhile, seasonal temperature swings can cause your tire pressure to fluctuate, which affects everything from fuel economy to braking distance.

If you’ve noticed your vehicle pulling to one side, or you’re feeling vibrations through the steering wheel, it might be time to check your tire balance or alignment.

DIY Tip – Check Tire Pressure & Tread Depth at Home

Want to check in on your tires between service appointments? Here's a quick DIY:

Check Your Tire Pressure
Use a digital or manual pressure gauge to check your tire pressure when the tires are cold (before driving). You’ll find the recommended PSI on a sticker inside your driver’s side door.

Check Your Tread Depth
Grab a penny and insert it headfirst into the tread grooves. If you can see all of Lincoln’s head, your tread is too low and it's time for new tires. For better accuracy, you can also use a tread depth gauge.
