How do you deal with it when it lights up? Knowing what the check engine light means will save you time, money, and the frustrations of dealing with bigger car problems in the future. Your check engine light is a key component of your car's on-board diagnostic (OBD) system. It's a warning light that tells you that the engine, transmission, or emission control system has detected a problem. Anything can set off that light, from a loose gas cap to a failing catalytic converter. A few standard issues can turn on the check engine light. The easiest one is a loose or damaged gas cap.
