Maryland State Inspection – FAQs

How do I obtain a Maryland State Inspection Certificate for my vehicle?

To obtain an inspection certificate, you must have your vehicle inspected at an authorized state inspection station in Maryland. Walt Eger’s is authorized to inspect:

  • Passenger cars;
  • Light trucks and SUV’s with a gross vehicle weight rating of 10,000 pounds or less
  • Trailers with a gross vehicle weight rating of 10,000 pounds or less

Before you bring the vehicle to be inspected, ensure that it is properly registered, either in Maryland or in another state. If you are not able to register the vehicle because it has not yet received a state inspection, you may qualify for a 30-day temporary registration that will enable you to legally drive the vehicle to us. Give us a call and we can walk you through this.

How long does an MSI take?

Unlike some other states that perform a quick annual inspection, the Maryland State Inspection is a one-time inspection for the vehicle owner and tends to be more thorough. Therefore, it takes roughly 60-90 minutes for most vehicles once our registered inspection mechanic begins work. Please make an appointment so we can both be efficient with our time.

When the mechanic has finished, he/she will prepare an inspection report that shows the vehicle parts or systems examined and whether it has met Maryland requirements.
If the vehicle passes, you will receive a printed certificate to take to the MVA. In addition, ALL MSI’s are now submitted electronically to the MVA so having the paper copy is not required. We provide a paper copy just in case.

What happens if my vehicle fails the Maryland State Inspection?

If your vehicle fails to meet any portion of the inspection, the Maryland Inspection Certificate cannot be issued. You must have the failed item(s) identified on the station’s inspection report fixed and then have the vehicle re-inspected by the same registered inspection mechanic at the same station. You have the option of fixing the item(s) yourself, having the inspection station fix the item(s), or taking the vehicle to another facility for repairs.

How long do I have to fix the needed repairs to pass inspection?

Repairs must be completed within 30 days of the original inspection date and the vehicle may not be driven more than 1,000 miles to comply with Maryland law. The inspection station will need to inspect only the defective items identified during the inspection. However, if a new defect is visually observed during the re-inspection, the newly discovered defect must also be repaired and re-inspected. See Maryland's regulations (COMAR A(3)) for details. Note that the inspection station may charge for each re-inspection, unless the repair can be visually verified quickly without putting it back up on the lift. If you wait too long or drive too far, you will have to begin the inspection process again, paying for another inspection.

I received a notice for an Emissions Inspection in the mail. Can I get an Emissions Inspection done at Walt Eger’s?

Unfortunately, no. The State of Maryland has its own Emissions Inspection Stations. The closest ones to you are most likely in Glen Burnie, Columbia or Annapolis. Here is a link to the Maryland Vehicle Emissions Inspection (VEIP) site:

If my vehicle fails the Emissions Inspection, where can I get the repairs done?

Walt Eger’s is a Certified Emissions Repair Facility (CERF) for the State of Maryland. We are happy to assist you with getting your car through the emissions process.
